Songs Lincoln Loved (Click to go to :Civil War Times: The People's Favourites or scroll down )
It has been widely acknowledged by Lincoln scholars that Abraham Lincoln was a poetic and sentimental man. Music played a large part in his every day life… Abe LOVED music. Suzanne and Jim have researched and recaptured many of the songs Lincoln loved, songs that affected and shaped him throughout his life. Examining this music reveals an intimate view of the character of the man, his strength and the inspiration that guided him from his humble log cabin beginnings to the office of President of the United States during our country’s most turbulent time. Suzanne and Jim offer light-hearted songs such as Blue Tail Fly, sentimental songs like Gentle Annie, along with humorous songs that lifted Abe’s spirits during times of trouble.
This program was developed for performance during the 2009 bicentennial celebration of Lincoln’s birth and has been presented at such prestigious venues as The Carl Sandburg National Historic Site, Flat Rock, NC; Wilson’s Creek Battlefield National Park, Republic, MO; Lincoln Memorial Shrine, Redlands, CA
"... a fun and insightful program of the music which brought pleasure and consolation to one of America’s greatest men."

With the soft scent of magnolia blossoms wafting gently on a southern breeze, the tart plunk of the banjo and one of Stephen Foster's best-loved melodies Hard Times Come Again No More, Suzanne and Jim transport you back to America in the mid-1800's. Hear the sentimental side of life during America's most turbulent trial, the melodies that civilians and soldiers sang to leave strife behind: O' Susannah, Some Folks Do, and Home, Sweet Home.
Suzanne and Jim were recently privileged to examine a private collection of 1860's contemporary popular music, acquired by a soldier in the 2nd Michigan Volunteers. Throughout the war he sent these individual pieces of sheet music to a correspondent of his, a piano player whose entire folio was preserved by her family. From this and other sources, Suzanne and Jim have assembled an authentic "Hit Parade" of music enjoyed by all Americans during the Civil War. The presentation features the favorite waltzes of both Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee. This program is a tribute to the spirits of the brave men and women who lightened their cares with sentimental and lively songs of a happier time. |
"We have had other music at previous events, but none that add as much to the friendly good time atmosphere as yours. The thousand-plus spectators who had come to sample the old-time crafts and living history displays got a real treat when they gathered around to see your shows - fun music, energetic dancing, good family humor, and above all solid showmanship. Our reenactors, some of whom are very choosy about the music they want at a civil war event, were delighted with your selection and variety of period tunes."
