Workshops
Workshops generally follow one of two formats. They may be mini-concerts focusing on some particular topic or they may be a hands-on learning experience.
Suzanne and Jim have moderated workshops on a number of subjects including Carter Family Songs, 19 th Century popular songwriters, and Old Timey sing-arounds, and are always ready to participate in sessions where Americana Roots music is appropriate. Because of their familiarity with a broad base of traditional and historic music they can contribute to many different workshop themes.
Jim has been a teacher of the clawhammer banjo style for more than 40 years. In 1978-79 he authored the Old Time Tutorial forBanjo Newsletter exposing players of all styles to the clawhammer method. For beginning level students he offers private lessons or small workshops. For advanced level players he works with small groups to improve their techniques and to help them find new avenues for exploration.

"...but the best part was the concert given by Suzanne and Jim, joined for part of the time by their students."
Alcona Arts Retreat, Inspiration Alcona, Alpena, MI
Suzanne teaches the individual style of traditional clogging to participants wishing to learn elements of Appalachian folk dance.
Emphasis is placed on learning the basics followed by examples of creating rhythms to express each individual’s interpretation of the music. A real “foots-on” experience requiring a wood floor and hard-soled shoes, Suzanne’s clogging workshops have been the highlight of numerous music gatherings.
